Treatments: Sore Throats/Strep Throat In Children

Post by Archangel on Tue Oct 14, 2008 9:23 pm

Treatments: Sore Throats/Strep Throat In Children
by Shana R. May

Sore throats, with the exception of strep throat, are almost always
(9/10) caused by viruses, which *cannot* be treated with antibiotics;
however, you can attempt to soothe the symptoms of a common sore throat
-- pain, itchy throat. [1]
Strep Throat versus Sore Throat?
Strep Throat Symptoms: Sore, red back of throat, may have
puss around the tonsils. Other symptoms of strep throat include: fever,
headache, nausea, vomiting, stomachache, swollen lymph glands (on the
front of the neck, under the chin, near the ears), and sometimes a rash
(Scarlett Fever).
Most children who get Step Throat are between 3 and 4 years old.
Strep throat is usually very painful and seems to linger without
medication. You cannot tell if your child has Strep Throat as opposed
to a Sore Throat by just looking at your child's throat. (One study,
which asked doctors to diagnose Strep based on sight were right only
50% of the time.)[1]
If your child has a fever or other symptoms with his sore throat, but does not have cold, you should visit your doctor.
Easing Sore Throat: Treating the Symptoms:

  • Increase your child's liquid intake.
  • Warm tea (caffeine-free) with honey (not for children under xx years).
  • Use a steamer or humidifier in your child's bedroom.
  • Try
a mouth-watering remedy. ''You want to induce salivation, which can be
done with cough drops, Life Savers or--for older children--medicated
lozenges,'' says Russell Steele, M.D., professor and vice chairman of
the Department of Pediatrics at the Louisiana State University School
of Medicine in New Orleans. This will help reduce pain and also wash
away waste material generated by the inflammation process, he says. [2]
  • On that same note, for younger children, suckers or posicles are a better alternative.
  • Older children can gargle with warm salt water several times daily: ¼ tsp. salt to ½ cup water.
  • Children
can be given over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen
(Tylenol Sore Throat®) or ibuprofen (Motrin ®, Advil®).
  • Nonprescription
Chloraseptic spray (my kids hate the taste, but it might relieve the
pain long enough to help your child fall asleep if given right before
    bedtime.)
  • You can try "Dimetapp Get Better Bear Sore Throat
Pops" suckers for kids. The lollipops received a 4/5 stars from other
    parents at ePinions.com.

What about chicken soup?
The warmth of chicken soup can soothe your child's throat, if you
can get him to to eat it. Also good, is the sodium, which is an
electrolyte that helps your child from getting dehydrated.
What about Herbal Remedies?
"Brew a sore throat tea. In 1 quart of water, boil some or
(preferably) all of the following: 1 tablespoon of licorice root, 1
tablespoon of hyssop, 2 tablespoons of slippery elm bark, and 1
teaspoon of sage. Licorice and slippery elm soothe irritated mucous
membranes and ease a sore throat. Hyssop and sage detoxify the blood.
Give your child one dose of tea, three times daily, for a couple of
days or until she feels better. She can also gargle with this tea when
it has cooled. Note: Licorice should not be given to a child with high blood pressure." [3]
What to Avoid when your Child has a Sore Throat:

  • Acidic food/drinks, such as orange juice.
  • Carbonated drinks.
  • Warm
drinks with honey (children under the age of xx should not have honey)
can be soothing, but most children prefer cool drinks.

If your child has the following symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately:

  • Swallowing is extremely painful (causing drooling).
  • Your child's speech is muffled.
  • Breathing becomes difficult.
  • Fever over 101°.
  • Blood in saliva or phlegm.
  • Difficulty opening the mouth.
  • The pain lasts more than two to three days.
  • Your child refuses to drink.

Home Remedies for Children's SORE THROAT

* Garlic can help to fight the viral and bacterial infections responsible for sore throats. Use plenty of garlic in cooking or give 3 Garlic oil tablets daily.

* Red Sage makes an effective gargle for an inflamed throat. Make an infusion and use warm, twice a day for 5 minutes each time. This may also be drunk as a soothing tea.

* Cinnamon and Ginger can help to ease the sore throats associated with colds. Warm a little fruit juice such as pineapple, grape or apple in a saucepan and sprinkle in about half a teaspoon of powdered Cinnamon or Ginger for a comforting drink.

* For babies up to 6 months old: add Lavender or Chamomile essential oil to a base of Almond oil and gently rub into the chest and throat area.

* For babies over 6 months old: Tea Tree essential oil can be also be used.

* For children over 6 years old: Lemon and Ginger essential oil can be added to this repertoire, used alone or in simple blends of two essences of your choice.

* Make a mouthwash with 4 drops of either Lavender, Chamomile, Lemon, Ginger or Tea Tree oil in 50 ml of tepid (previously boiled) water. Pour a small amount into a glass and ask your child to take a mouthful, swishing the mixture around his mouth for 30 seconds. It also helps to gargle with the mixture before spitting it away.
